ADVANTAGES AND APPLICATIONS
The DURACELL zinc/potassium hydroxide/manganese dioxide battery system, commonly referred to as alkaline or Alkaline Manganese Dioxide, is now recognized as the premium primary zinc anode battery system. It has been selected for consumer, industrial and military applications where an economical and reliable battery is required.
Its major advantages (compared to the zinc-carbon battery system) are a high energy density; the ability to operate continuously at relatively high discharge rates over a wide temperature range (due to its lower internal resistance); and a shelf life in excess of four years. The cost of the alkaline battery, on a service life basis, is lowest in medium to high drain applications.
CHEMISTRY
The components of the alkaline-manganese battery are a zinc anode, a manganese dioxide cathode, and a highly conductive potassium hydroxide electrolyte.
CONSTRUCTION
The DURACELL alkaline cell is cylindrical in design. A cutaway view of a representative battery is shown above.
RATED CAPACITY
The DURACELL alkaline battery system is available in standard cylindrical and multicell configurations (34 mAh to 15,000 mAh).
PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS
Voltage
The open circuit voltage ranges from 1.5 to 1 .6V, depending on cathode formulation. Typical median operating voltage ranges from 1.3 to 1.1V under moderate discharge conditions.
Discharge Characteristics
Moderately sloping discharge curve.
Energy Density
75 Wh/lb. (163 Wh/kg); 6.5 Wh/in.3 (398 Wh/l).
Effect of Discharge Load and Temperature
Capable of performance at high discharge rates; typical temperature range: -4°F to 130°F (-20°C to 54°C).
Shelf Life
Up to 85% capacity remaining after 4 years of storage at 70°F (21°C).

ADVANTAGES AND APPLICATIONS
DURACELL lithium batteries represent the latest advance in primary battery technology, having many advantages over conventional battery systems. Their high energy density, high rate pulse capability, long shelf life and ability to operate at temperature extremes make them ideal for meeting the demanding requirements of new portable electronic equipment.
Lithium Manganese Dioxide (Li/MnO2) batteries are ideal for electronic equipment requiring high rate pulses (e.g., photoflash), as well as other sophisticated devices requiring continuous operation or memory backup. DURACELL lithium cells are recognized under the Underwriters Laboratories Component Recognition Program.
CHEMISTRY
Lithium cells use lithium metal for the anode and a conductive organic electrolyte. The Li/MnO2 cell uses a specially prepared manganese dioxide for the cathode.
CONSTRUCTION
DURACELL Li/MnO2 cells are available in two configurations: cylindrical cells using spiral-wound electrodes for high current pulse or continuous drain applications, and coin-shaped cells for memory backup and small electronic device applications. Cutaway views of a spiral-wound cell and a coin cell are shown above.
RATED CAPACITY
The Li/MnO2 coin cells range in capacity from 76 mAh to 500 mAh; the spiral-wound cylindrical cells are available in 160 mAh and 1.4 Ah sizes.
PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS
Voltage
The open circuit voltage of the Li/MnO2 cell is typically 3.2V, compared to 1 .5V for most zinc cells. Typical median operating voltage ranges from 3.0 to 2.5V.
Discharge Characteristics
Flat (stable voltage) discharge curves.
Energy Density
Depending on cell configuration, up to 105 Wh/lb. (230 Wh/kg); 9.0 Wh/in.3 (550 Wh/l).
Effect of Discharge Load and Temperature
Capable of performance at low to high discharge rates on pulse or continuous loads; excellent low temperature capability. The typical operating temperature range for Li/MnO2 cells is -4°F to 140°F (-40°C to 60°C), with performance at wider temperature ranges possible.
Shelf Life
Capacity retention is over 95% after 5 years of room temperature storage.
Silver Oxide
ADVANTAGES AND APPLICATIONS
The DURACELL® zinc/silver oxide cell is noted for its high volumetric energy density and its ability to deliver this energy at relatively high current drains. Silver oxide cells are ideal for miniature devices where space is limited, such as small electronic and photographic equipment. Their relatively high cost limits their usage to specialized applications.
CHEMISTRY
The silver cell uses an amalgamated zinc anode, silver oxide as the cathode material, and a potassium hydroxide electrolyte.
CONSTRUCTION
The silver cell is manufactured in button cell configurations. A typical DURACELL silver button cell is shown above.
RATED CAPACITY
The silver button cell ranges from 14 mAh to 180 mAh.
PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS
Voltage
The open circuit voltage of the silver cell is 1.6 V. Typical median operating voltage is 1.5 to 1.2 V.
Discharge Characteristics
The silver oxide battery system has a flat discharge curve.
Energy Density
60 Wh/lb. (130 Wh/kg); 8.2 Wh/in.3 (500 Wh/l).
Effect of Discharge Load and Temperature
The silver oxide system is capable of discharge at relatively heavy loads. The silver system is best suited for operation from -4°F to 130°F (-20°C to 54°C).
Shelf Life
The charge retention of the silver cell is over 84% after two years of storage at 70°F (21°C).
